Henry Retires From Bob Freesen YMCA, Executive Search Begins

Executive Director Mary Henry retired from the Bob Freesen YMCA on February 3 with a well-attended celebration that evening with staff, family, members and community friends in the YMCA lobby. Henry led the agency for the last 18 plus years making improvements to the aging building, including putting in an elevator, incorporating new Y branding into the Y and adding the branding outside the building as well and resurfacing its tennis courts several times and adding pickleball lines for its growing pickleball community.

Henry also oversaw new flooring throughout the building, refurbishment of the Women’s Triangle Center, parking lot and road improvements, a new maintenance shed, a cross-training gym, pool improvements such as new lights, new windows and tiling work.

She was extremely proud of the Parkinson’s program at the Y which includes the Rock Steady Boxing run by certified trainer Amy Little. This program continues to grow and help people in Jacksonville and the surround communities.

During her tenure she also faced the challenge of the Covid shutdown and rising minimum wage for workers. Henry secured grants and local donations to keep the doors open and maintain the Y staff.

“I’ve been honored to carry on the good works of the YMCA,” says Henry. She credits past directors, such as Larry Meyer, for all they did for this YMCA. “I’m very excited for the future of the Bob Freesen YMCA and I know I’m leaving it in good shape and in good hands with Jared Maggard as Interim Director and with Board Chairman Heather Leonard in position to hire the next Executive Director to move the Y into the next era.”

Henry grew up in the YMCA playing tennis in 1968 when the current facility opened and later her children and grandchildren also regularly spent time at the Y.

As Henry leaves the YMCA to spend more time with her children and grandchildren, the Bob Freesen YMCA prepares for the future.

The Bob Freesen YMCA in Jacksonville is seeking an innovative, strategic and community-minded individual to serve as its next CEO. The CEO will build trust and extend the breadth and depth of the Y’s reach across its service area. The CEO will lead collaborative efforts to grow and maintain productive working relationships in the community that enhances our reputation and furthers our mission and impact.
